Mahjong Lemon Angel

Mahjong Lemon Angel was a game released in 1994 for the Super-CD-ROM by Fairy Dust and Naxat Soft the CD-ROM is also known as the TurboGrafix-16.

(Naxat is known today as Kaga Create LTD)

The company originally created games for the PC Engine and later released games for gaming systems such as Super Nintendo, Game Boy, 3DO, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast and the Playstation. The company stopped releasing games in 2005. Their final releases were re-releases on TurboGrafix on the Wii.

The game features 3 characters, Miki, Tomo & Erika and full-on voice acting by a different set of voice actors as the originals split-up in 1990.  Meaning Sakurai Tomo, Emoto Miki & Shima Erika do not provide vocals for this game.   Tomo sounds more baby-ish in this game. (voice-wise) if you were to compare her voice in this game just think Usagi from Sailor Moon.

Information 

The game is mahjong based which is pretty boring... but the game also has a visual-novel type theme to it.  You can adventure with Tomo, Miki or Erika, and the two of you can go swimming, skiing, camping, ect.  When you arrive at your destination you are forced to play mahjong with one of the three girls. (The one you chose to play with)

The game is more or less tounge-in-cheek it doesn't get too risque, you can see the odd panty-shot, it's more or less mild material.

Alright let's get down to business... according to a Japanese source... Miki Emoto is dead? Now this source was posted in 2009 on a Japanese blog.

Update:   Miki Emoto is "NOT" dead, it was a horrible RUMOR!

Basically the blog stated that Lemon Angel didn't get on very well together and that there was alot of rivalry in the group. It also stated that Miki Emoto had vanished six months ago during 1990 when the band had split-up. 

Emotional Instability

Other information given is that Miki was an Emotional Instability which means she could have had borderline personality disorder (Emotional Instability can also include self-harming and suicide), now all this information is from a Japanese man who used to work with Lemon Angel. 

According to other information given when the band split-up neither Erika or Miki's names appeared on names of Big Stars in Japan, it's like they had been blacklisted? Erika has a different story... according to Erika they retired. (Trust me Lemon Angel was big in Japan for quite a while)

Lonely Twilight  also known as Lonely Lonely Lonely/Tasogare Lonely was a song released in 1987 for Lemon Angel's first album entitled Lemon Angel 1st.  The song was also used for the opening of Midnight Lemon Angel.  In later years after Lemon Angel had split-up Tomo Sakurai would perform this song alone.

What is Lemon Angel about?

Three lovely teenagers and the three actresses who provide their voices share their midnight confidences and fantasies with the TV audience, as Erika Shima, Miki Emoto, and Tomo Sakurai play "themselves" in a sanitized late-night TV incarnation of the Cream Lemon franchise. Purporting to be studying at the fictitious Lemon Academy (compare to Kira Kira Melody Academy), the girls returned to the following year for a second season, though it was soon taken off the air. Sakurai's career did not suffer, and she was soon a popular voice actress in mainstream anime such as EL Hazard. The other actresses no longer show up on lists of big names.  Lemon Angel Young Junior (1990) comprised two toned-down videos made for more censorious times, with Sakurai directed by Tetsuro Amino, who would make her a "Star" in Macross 7. Lemon Angel Project (2006) is a 13-part TV series in which a producer attempts to assemble a group of young performers to form a new Lemon Angel, in imitation of a girl band from the past. Innocent starstruck schoolgirl Tomo Minaguchi signs up for the auditions, unaware of the more salacious side of the previous Lemon Angels.


Update on the Manga:


After carefully reading about it, i finally learn't that the characters in the "Manga" are not actually Tomo, Miki and Erika, they are actually based upon Tomo, Miki and Erika.  So really, the Watanabe Jun couldn't use the real "Lemon Angel" instead he created 3 girls based upon Tomo, Miki and Erika, who went by the names Medaka, Rei and Satomi.  The story in the Manga is pretty much the same as the Anime series, they do the same things, with a little lesbianism intertwined, and typical boy chasing, boyfriends, crushes on teachers, ect.

Found You Erika Shima... or should i say Erika Okushima! (エリカ奥島)

As a fan of the original trio Lemon Angel from the 80's i knew eventually that i would "Eventually" come across the one and only "Erika Shima" (エリカ奥島) .  Now the only way i was able to find Erika was to actually go through actual Japanese websites.   Erika no longer goes by the name Erika Shima... she uses her birth name "Erika Okushima" and another name by the name of "Erika Island" or "Island Erika".

What does Erika do these days?

Last year she was a participant for a NPO (Non profit organizations) where she was helping animals in a animal shelter. The website stated she was pleased tobe active in Tokyo. The company who formed the event hoped to change the government for animals in the future.

I did some full on research of Erika and it confirms that she had participated in a contest entitled "Lemon Angel Image Girl Contest" and that First Class Love Crime was a big hit with the group. But in 1990 the group split-up. It is stated that Erika Island had retired.  So i guess there will not be a Lemon Angel reunion, as the group disbanded along time ago, and have never reunited.  Also a little update, in the late 90's Tomo Sakurai performed her hit songs to a live audience, several included songs from Lemon Angel, which means that... Tomo Sakurai actually didn't need Miki & Erika.

Lemon Angel had a game released in 1995 which was developed by Fairy Dust for PC-98.  

The game is a adult visual novel and is a first person perspective.

Story

The game features Tomo a high school student, probably best known from the Anime series.  The plot involves Tomo meeting her best friends Miki & Erika, only to become trapped in a magical dimension with her friends gone. Tomo must travel to various worlds in order to find them, the worlds, these worlds have varied themes andsettings, including an alien attack on a spaceship a country populated by giant sexually abusive mushrooms. 

(The same mushroom which was featured Anime series) 

In a realm that changes Tomo's gender, ect. explicity sexual scenes occupy a large portion of the game.

 First Class Love Crime was a song released by Lemon Angel in 1988 for their second album entitled Lemon Angel 2nd. The song was originally recorded by a band in the united kingdom called Bananarama with the title Love in the First Degree.   The live action video features Tomo, Miki & Erika, they can be seen having a sleepover over Tomo's house and Tomo can clearly be seen fantasising about her boyfriend and waiting for him to call her at the end of the video the trio can be seen doing aerobics, whilst singing, this is classed as the official video for the song.

The Anime version only features Tomo who can be seen fantasising about her boyfriend, she can be seen getting ready for school, and there is a breif scene where she is naked in space.

Tomo Sakurai ( トモ桜井)

Speaking of Lemon Angel, Tomo Sakurai (トモ桜井) was probably the only member to prosper into a great career in voice-over work, let's get to know a little more about her.  In fact if you watch her carefully in the live action Lemon Angel episodes you can see that she is the shining star out of the trio.  Let's go  a little deeper into her life, Tomo was born on the 10th of September in 1971 in the city of Ichikawa in the Chiba Prefecture of Japan.

The Lemon Angel Live Action Film That Flopped (2006)

In 2006 the same year when Lemon Angel Project was released a Hinya Nishimura had an  idea... which was "Oh, let's make a new Live Action Lemon Angel Feature" several years later featuring a whole new cast... as the original trio Tomo, Miki & Erika.  Starring Haruka Ogura, Ryo Shihono & Saki Yoshida.  Now i'm unsure if this is a tribute to the original trio, Tomo Sakurai, Emoto Miki & Shima Erika.

According to the information given on the official website, it states that this 2006 release was based on Lemon Angel Project, the Anime series.  Which features 3 best friends Miki, Erika & Tomo...  but in Lemon Angel Project, Saya was Tomo's 3rd best friend which means this live action film doesn't follow the Lemon Angel Project storyline but more or less follows the original trio from the 80's, which means this is really based on the "80's pop group Lemon Angel, as there were only 3 members of the group".

Now i was originally going to say, that maybe this live action film flopped because it didn't have an animated series but i'm actually wrong because apparently Lemon Angel Project is what this film is based on... and Lemon Angel Project is based on Midnight Lemon Angel.

Alight let's get down to business.... if you are curious as to why company's can rip off the original group Lemon Angel, Tomo Sakurai, Emoto Miki & Shima Erika, it all goes down to contracts... the original trio wanted to be known  in Japan so they signed up with pop idol unit Lemon Angel a counter project of Cream Lemon by the same company that produced "KISS Fairlies", Meaning they don't own the rights to the characters even though they are based on themselves, not to mention as said before they signed contacts, so they will never be able to sue, if people use the personas they created.

Reasons for Flopping?

Let's just say one thing... they are "NOT" the originals, you can't just make something and expect us to be like "WOW" it's Lemon Angel, because they are not the original trio... so the wow factor will not work!  Would love to see the original trio unite, imitators/younger models should move aside as they are not Tomo Sakurai, Erika Shima & Miki Emoto.

Now i know you would think to yourself "BUT THE ORINGAL TRIO ARE OLD BY NOW"  (I Don't Think That Really Matters)  or they could have at least let the original trio have a cameo in the film... now that would be something to laugh about... but no!   

Dear Original Members of Lemon Angel... you really need to comeback and do a reunion... or something, as you are missed!

Lemon Angel Project (Loosely based on 80's group Lemon Angel)

Lemon Angel Project is an Anime about a pop group who bases themselves on the actual Live Action band of the 80's Lemon Angel, three of the characters in the group have the exact same names as the three original members of Lemon Angel.  To be honest i myself, knew a long time ago that this 2006 Anime series was loosely based on Lemon Angel of the 1980's but nobody believed me, well at least now you finally know for sure.

The series is set in 2017...and music is more advanced, ect.  It is stated that a previous band by the name of Lemon Angel had made it big but only performed in large flat screens that served as ad spaced in the city, and after while the band disappeared leaving no trace.

Tomo Minaguchi

Tomo is the main character of the series, and her name is most likely a reference to the previous Tomo for the original Lemon Angel. As you can clearly see they both take a liking to bread.

. Other characters in the series include Saya Yuki, Erika Campell , Miru Nagisa, Fuyimi Sakakibara and Miki Suwa.  

Alright let's get down to business... the characters in Lemon Angel Project are completely different... so why give them the same names as the previous members of Lemon Angel, also to note Tomo in Lemon Angel Project is best friends with Saya & Erika, in the original it was Tomo, Erika & Miki.  But then again the band in this Anime series are not the original Lemon Angel, they formed themselves together and made you could say a more or less tribute band.   Isn't it funny how one of the members actually resembles the original Tomo with the red hair & ponytails.  None of the music references the original, you could say the 80's music was outdated... but people can always remaster music.

If someone in japan should have brought back the original Lemon Angel at that time, instead of making something new... it was always a 3 group girl-band, and was never bigger than that.  The orignal Lemon Angel of the 80's are 100 percent better, although that series is more adult related in the Anime version.

So what do i think of Lemon Angel Project? I think i'll pass on the series it seems boring, i watched a few episodes and they were just talking about things that are not interesting to say the least, although the music is quite catchy, i personally will stick with Midnight Lemon Angel, because it's a classic and it doesn't bore the shit out of me.

Tokyo Rose was a song released by Lemon Angel in 1988 and featured on Lemon Angel's second album Lemon Angel 2nd, it features Tomo Sakurai, Shima Erika & Emoto Miki.  The song was also featured in the Anime version of Lemon Angel, where the girls can be seen flying nude around Tokyo and flirting with an artist who is drawing them and their boyfriends. In the live action version they can be seen busting some 80's Japanese dance moves, and apparently the song they are performing is supposed to have been heard all around Tokyo, in which is what they are trying to display, as they can be seen on JOLA radio.
